It Happened in Mexico

At the start of each book, there’s a little blurb that says “Names, characters, places and incidents either are the products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously…” While true, there is one scene in Loyalty to the Cause that fictionalizes a real event. It happened in Mexico.

My wife and I were in Zihuatanejo and we were looking for an ATM. A local gentleman who spoke perfect English pointed one out for us. We got to talking, and he offered to take us the following day to see the local sites. It was one of those things where, looking back, it seems a risky choice now, but back then it sounded like and was a great adventure.

We met Victor at the local bus station. We were going to take a local bus to a nearby village, meet the people, see a 300-year-old cactus, and see some artifacts found in the area. All of that happened, but the scene stolen for Loyalty to the Cause happened on the bus ride. It made several stops as we made our way into the countryside, and at one of them, a strange gentleman came aboard. Unlike the other passengers, he was in a business suit, and he stood at the front of the bus. He started speaking to the entire bus, gesturing with a folded case that looked to us like it might hold a passport.

My wife and I didn’t speak Spanish well enough to understand what he wanted. Taking our cue from the folded case, we were guessing he was checking passports for some reason, and we had left ours at our hotel. What would we do if he asked to see our identification? Frantic, we turned to Victor, who was sitting in the seat behind us and asked if the man was a government official and would ask for our passports.

“No, he’s just some guy selling wallets.”

Because, of course, one should expect a finely dressed wallet salesman on a country bus in Mexico. Anyway, you’ll know the scene in Loyalty to the Cause this story inspires when you read it.

Loyalty to the Cause, Now in Print

As expected, the print proof from Createspace arrived early!  Colors and interior look good, so I’ve approved Book 4 for release on Amazon.com and of course the Createspace site itself.  It may take a day for the Kindle version and print version to sync up their pages, but for all those waiting for Loyalty to the Cause in paperback, the wait is essentially over.  The link on the Book 4 Notes page will be updated just as soon as I see the book live on Amazon.

Loyalty to the Cause is the longest book in the series yet, so the print-on-demand costs are a little higher than the previous books.  Amazon.com tends to discount the Createspace list price, so hopefully we’ll see the same trend for Book 4.

Planning the End Game

I took a week off following the release of Loyalty to the Cause, but Monday marks December 1st and it will be time to get back to it. The final book in Garrett Heskan’s story will have a solid outline before the holidays. This one I want to take my time with, more than usual. As I’ve hinted before, there will be more stories set in this universe, but certain loose ends need to be wrapped up in Last Measure of Devotion and I’ll take the time to think those through.

I should say that choosing a title for Book 5 was the hardest yet. The titles of new books are always hidden in the text of the previous books. I had a working title in mind for Book 5 and planted it in Book 4’s dialogue, but there was one thing wrong with it. It ended clumsily in a preposition, and rewording it made it unnatural. Still, Book 5 was almost called “A Corner Worth Fighting For.” It’s still not bad, and it conveys Heskan’s journey well.

At the last possible second, we found “Last Measure of Devotion” in Heskan’s dialogue in Loyalty to the Cause. It expresses a finality to his story arc, or perhaps not just his story arc. I also think there is another meaning to the title, this one between author and reader. If you read Book 5, it will complete my promise of the series to you, and at the same time you’ll have supported me the entire series.

I haven’t decided what I will write after Book 5, but there are a few ideas. Last Measure of Devotion needs my full attention first. That said, I’ve enjoyed planting some seeds for future stories in Garrett Heskan’s series, and I’m looking forward to at least one of them growing in 2015.
