Delayed

I’ve been fearing that this would happen and it has. Book 5, Last Measure of Devotion, is waiting on a book cover. When finishing out the series, I decided to invest money into providing the entire series with professionally created book covers. I’ve always hated my homemade covers and thought it was time to do the series justice.

I’ve been working with a book cover artist for many months, but he has just run into technical troubles at the eleventh hour. Consequently, the cover for Book 5 has been slightly delayed. He has sent me preliminary covers for all the books (and Book 1’s cover is completely finished) and they look gorgeous. I think pushing back Last Measure of Devotion’s release a day or two to wait for these wonderful covers is much better than publishing today with a homemade cover and then republishing 24 hours later with a different one.

I apologize to those of you waiting for the series finale. One thing Garrett Heskan and I share is an abhorrence for being late. I’ve always been either on time or early with the releases of the other books and I’m disappointed to have missed the mark this time. Hopefully, the story and the cover will make it up to you.

We’ll update via Twitter, Facebook and this blog as we get information but I’ve been assured the cover artist is hard at work finishing the product.

One upside is that we’re going through the book again searching for any editing errors and we’ve discovered a couple minor ones. So, although the delay is regrettable, you’ll be getting a better product at the end.

Below is the cover for Book 1, This Corner of the Universe. I hope you agree that the modest delay is worth the wait. The artist is enormously talented.

Description for Last Measure of Devotion

As the editing continues, it’s time to start working on the quotes to tweet and the book description for the product pages. It’s always hard (at least for me) to sum up a new novel, and as the series has progressed, the story has become more complicated and interwoven. How do you “sum up” Heskan’s final stand? Here’s my best effort:

Garrett Heskan means to make his home in Seshafi, far from his enemies and his past in the Brevic Republic. But the small system is under unprecedented attack from its neighbors in the Sade system, bent on absorbing Seshafi’s ruling corporation into its own. Heskan was forced to lead the Seshafian navy to a brutal victory, but one battle will not win this war.

Thrust into the fleet commander role and still learning the peculiar scriptures of corporate warfare, Heskan must work with AmyraCorp’s CEO to stay one step ahead of Sade and the treachery of Admiral Wallace. The moves in this winner-take-all game of corporate takeover will see Heskan at The Courts of Nessus and on battlefields in both Sade and Seshafi. Can Heskan find a way to secure the future he promised his Brevic followers when they fled to this corner of the universe, or will Heskan’s past be used against him to orchestrate Wallace’s victory?

This is the final book in the This Corner of the Universe series, completing the story of Garrett Heskan and the original crew of Anelace.

Job Done

LMOD_wc

I’m very pleased to announce that I have just finished the rough draft of Last Measure of Devotion. The novel clocks in at nearly 95,000 words. That makes it fit in somewhere between Loyalty to the Cause (98K) and No Way to Start a War (87K). The word count will change marginally with editing, and I already know that I want to insert an extra scene in the book but itshouldn’t go radically up or down at this point.

My goal is pushing “Publish” at Amazon and Barnes & Noble by the end (very end) of August but there is a LOT of editing to do between now and then. I take deep pride that my readers aren’t knocked out of my stories by rampant typos. Sometimes you can control the story, sometimes the story controls you, but editing is something you can always control.

I will post more blog entries and tweets as we get closer but for now, please know that the lion’s share of the work is finished and this book will be released this Summer. I appreciate your patience.
