New Characters in Hero…

Hero of the Republic is a book that spans about a decade in the TCOTU galaxy. If you’ve read the original series, you’ll be rewarded with a few characters you already know. You’ll have a deeper understanding of Minister Fane’s secret machinations and see her right-hand man, Sebastian Brewer, on the battlefield. But the majority of the action brings many new characters into the TCOTU canon. Here are a few you’ll soon meet:

Caden Twist: Hero of the Republic opens with Caden in OTS, or Officer Training School. It’s not exactly where he wants to be. Still, over the course of the book, the young Mr. Twist sees action aboard several Brevic naval starships.

Sabrina Twist: A retired Brevic Navy captain turned civil “servant,” Caden’s mother is a high-ranking secretary in the Ministry of Public Relations and Information. She’s famous throughout Brevic space as the spokesperson for the government, “The Voice of the Republic.” A mother with accomplishments such as hers needs a son worthy of the public eye.

Aoife Covington: Aoife lives in the Seshafi corporate system, far from the Brevic Republic. Seshafi has a connection to the Republic through one man however… Garrett Heskan. Aoife’s part of the story in Hero of the Republic sets up how her life leads her outside of her tiny, corporate star system.

Vix Kirkpatrick: Caden’s roommate in OTS, Vix is a patriot who doesn’t take life too seriously.

Lucy Holt: She’s a weapons officer who doesn’t take Vix Kirkpatrick too seriously.  🙂

There are many, many other characters in Hero of the Republic but the story centers on these lives and the events that place them each onto a collision course with the rest. This first book of The Parasite Initiative series is slated for a early/mid-September release.

Javelins and Greyhounds and More, Oh My!

Given the span of the new book, Hero of the Republic, I should’ve known that there would be a good number of significant action scenes. What I didn’t realize while writing it was just how many and how different the scenes would be. Hero covers the gambit from major fleet actions between competing governments and races to “down in the weeds” one-on-one fights. The breadth of combat made creating each action scene a pleasure to write because no two scenes were the same. I’ve written a fair amount of fleet battles by now but I was thrilled to watch these ship combats evolve as the creative process happened. I’ve always wondered “what if a fleet admiral decided to do this”? Writing Hero allowed me to explore those types of questions.

Another fascinating aspect of the combat scenes is the different technologies in play because of the time span of the novel. It’s fun to watch how improved technologies (Javelins and Greyhounds are just two missile examples) demand an adjustment of tactics and it’s fair to say that where the Brevic Republic starts out in Hero is not where it ends. I love the evolution of the universe. It’s certainly not some static background that never changes as the stories unfold. In fact, I had to recreate my stellar map because so much of the new story takes place after the Brevic-Hollaran conflict.

I’ll be ramping up my blog posts as Hero’s publish date grows near. So, please check back frequently. I plan to talk a little about the new characters you’ll be introduced to if you read the story. The book will be released in early September. I’m getting feedback from my final two beta readers this week and then I want a couple more weeks to scour through the novel to make it the best product it can be. Until then,… Sights tight!

“Hero” Has Its Cover

Hero of the Republic takes another step closer to its late Summer release with some fantastic artwork by Yvonne Less at Art 4 Artists:

I wanted a new look for the new series, and it was a great experience working with Yvonne. I highly recommend her not only for her obvious artistic talents, but also for her professionalism. I’ll be going back to Yvonne for each of the books in The Parasite Initiative. She also does promotional work (such as social media headers and other marketing needs) and her gallery showcases her work across many genres, so keep her in mind if you’re in need of graphics design!

Release Update: I have feedback from two more beta readers to collect on the Hero of the Republic draft, and this month I’m taking another read, this time on my Kindle to get the reader experience. It helps me to take a pass on the computer screen, on paper, and on my ereader… I always seem to find just one more thing or have one more idea. I expect to be making final edits in late August, and delivering the book to you all just as soon after that as we can. We’ve already got a draft Kindle version, and when it’s final we’ll need to create the Nook, Smashwords, and Createspace versions as well. This is our sixth run at the process though, and we’re getting pretty efficient with the formatting. Keep watching the blog, Facebook or Twitter for updates!
